McKai, aka Kindred Music SA: The Face of BetaState Music

Updated: Dec 10, 2024

If you’re a regular in the deep electronic music scene, you’ve probably encountered McKai Du Toit, the creative force behind Kindred Music SA.

Known as a producer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, live performer and DJ, McKai has become a pivotal figure in the world of deep electronic music. His genre-blending style is influenced by everything from rock and reggae to soul and jazz and has won him a dedicated following in both the local and international scene.

McKai’s musical journey began with acoustic instruments, where he mastered the piano and guitar before ever venturing into the world of electronic music. Since 2020, he’s been running Pocket Food Audio, a label and mix series that has further established him as a key player in the underground electronic scene. From his collaborations with artists like Fred Monk and Bient. Am. I, to his duo Myth with Vicmari, McKai’s body of work has been prolific, diverse, and ever-evolving.

His albums, such as "Exposed" (2021) and "Ask Me Where I’m Going" (2023), have garnered widespread acclaim within the scene, further cementing his place as an artist pushing the boundaries of deep electronic music.

What truly sets McKai apart however is not limited to his musical talent; it’s his ability to connect, collaborate, and build communities within the industry that has elevated him to his heights. This passion for collaboration is what led to the creation of BetaState Music, a new platform that is poised to make waves in the world of music and groundbreaking experiences.

A Chance Meeting

The Birth of BetaState Music

The story behind the creation of BetaState Music is a testament to serendipity and kismet, as McKai crossed paths with Gervais, the founder and head of BetaState. At the time, they were living in the same building, off-handedly greeting one another in the halls. Their casual greetings eventually led to deeper conversations, sparked up by one magical question: “Do you smoke weed?” Gervais, always up for an adventure, replied that he was actually about to go drop some off. From that point, a friendship blossomed that would ultimately lead to something incredible.

As their conversations deepened, McKai and Gervais realized that their careers, while seemingly different, had followed remarkably similar trajectories. They were both driven by a deep love for music and a desire to create something meaningful. Finally, over a bottle of Amarula (because, why not?), the idea for BetaState Music was born.

It was never just about music for them—it was about creating something bigger: a platform that could foster collaboration, shine a spotlight on talent, and give artists a place to grow. BetaState Music branches off from Gervais’s larger company, BetaState, which focuses on brand building and marketing, especially in the realm of events. It meets McKai’s label Pocket Food Audio in the middle, as the two men saw the potential to bring their unique strengths together. United, they combined their love for music with their passion for building communities and BetaState Music was born.

A Vision for Community & Engagement

At its heart, BetaState Music goes beyond just releasing tracks—it’s about creating a thriving ecosystem where artists, venues, promoters, and fans can all coexist and grow together. McKai and Gervais share a vision of an industry that doesn’t just entertain but brings people together, encouraging strong relationships and helping artists to flourish.

BetaState Music aims to be the go-to hub for all things electronic music. Whether it’s club events, festivals, or intimate pop-ups, BetaState Music will be the place to discover what’s happening next. The platform also seeks to support artists by offering them a space to share their work, connect with fans, and be part of a greater community. For promoters and venues, it will be a resource to discover fresh talent, stay updated on the latest events, and connect with the artists they love.

McKai and Gervais want BetaState Music to be a place where experiences are celebrated, where fans can find their next musical adventure, and where the magic of events is captured and shared. It’s a space for artists to be the focus and for their stories and sounds to reach a broader audience.

A Bright Future Ahead!

As BetaState Music continues to grow, it’s clear that McKai’s extensive experience in the music industry and Gervais’s expertise in brand building are the perfect combination for creating something truly unique. With a diverse roster of artists already onboard, including ALX, TRIZZY, SYMO, and Both Entities, BetaState Music is ready to make its mark on the global music scene.

Looking ahead, McKai and Gervais have big plans for the future of the platform. They want to develop BetaState Music into more than just a platform—they envision it as a movement, one that creates lasting relationships and opportunities for artists, fans, and everyone involved in the electronic music scene. From intimate club nights to massive festivals, they’re working hard to make BetaState Music the ultimate destination for fans and artists alike.

Whether you’re an artist looking for a platform to showcase your work or a fan searching for the latest happenings, BetaState Music is the place to be. With McKai at the helm, it’s a journey that’s just getting started—and the best is yet to come.

In every beat and every track, McKai, aka Kindred Music SA, continues to push the limits of electronic music, and with BetaState Music, he and Gervais are inviting us all to join the ride.
